Abstract A simple bottom boundary layer (BBL) model is developed to be incorporated into a z-coordinate medium resolution ocean general circulation model. In the BBL model, velocity is calculated from the pressure gradient, which is also calculated within the BBL. Preliminary experiments using an idealized basin model clearly document that, for reproducing realistic overflow/downslope flow, it is essential to adopt the horizontally distributed Rayleigh drag coefficient in the BBL model and also that, for avoiding warming of the abyssal ocean owing to unphysical strong flows created by the pressure gradient error along the steep slope, it is necessary to limit the area of the BBL. This BBL model is successfully incorporated into a World Ocean model with 1° × 1° resolution, producing the overflow/downslope flow in the northern North Atlantic and around Antarctica. The dense overflow/downslope flow water provides the nucleus of the abyssal water in the World Ocean, leading to the better representation of the abyssal water. Thus, the incorporation of the BBL model can reduce the warming bias for the abyssal water in a coarse resolution model without modifying surface boundary conditions. In addition, it can also alleviate the model bias of too shallow extension of North Atlantic Deep Water. We hypothesized that Behçet’s disease (BD) consists of several clinical subtypes with different severity, resulting in heterogeneity of the disease. Here, we conducted a study to identify clinical clusters of BD. A total of 657 patients registered in the Yokohama City University (YCU) regional BD registry between 1990 and 2018, as well as 6754 patients who were initially registered in the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) database between 2003 and 2014, were investigated. The YCU registry data regarding the clinical manifestations of BD, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) status, treatments, and hospitalizations were analyzed first, followed by similar analyses of the MHLW for validation. A hierarchical cluster analysis was independently performed in both patient groups. A hierarchical cluster analysis determined five independent clinical clusters in the YCU cohort. Individual counterparts of the YCU clusters were confirmed in the MHLW registry. Recent phenotypical evolutions of BD in Japan, such as increased gastrointestinal (GI) involvement, reduced complete type according to the Japan Criteria, and reduced HLA-B51 positivity were associated with chronologically changing proportions of the clinical clusters. The evolution of electronic (spin and charge) excitations upon carrier doping is an extremely important issue in superconducting layered cuprates and the knowledge of its asymmetry between electron- and hole-dopings is still fragmentary. Here we combine X-ray and neutron inelastic scattering measurements to track the doping dependence of both spin and charge excitations in electron-doped materials. Copper L3 resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectra show that magnetic excitations shift to higher energy upon doping. Their dispersion becomes steeper near the magnetic zone centre and they deeply mix with charge excitations, indicating that electrons acquire a highly itinerant character in the doped metallic state. Moreover, above the magnetic excitations, an additional dispersing feature is observed near the Γ-point, and we ascribe it to particle-hole charge excitations. These properties are in stark contrast with the more localized spin excitations (paramagnons) recently observed in hole-doped compounds even at high doping levels. Understanding spin dynamics in the cuprates is vital to understanding the origin high-temperature superconductivity. X-ray and neutron spectra obtained by Ishii et al.suggest that the spins in electron-doped cuprates are itinerant, in contrast to recent evidence that in hole-doped cuprates they are localized.
